I started playing with Raspberry Pi in October 2013.  Raspberry Pi has only 17 GPIO pins, not enough for me to play with servo based robot arms.  So I later tried MCP23008, MCP23017, MCP23S08, MCP23017 each of which has 8 or 16 GPIO pins.  I wanted still more pins, so I tried CPLD Xilinx XC9500XL which can be programmed with 25 GPIO pins.  But then I found the Somy ARM Cortex M0 LPC1114/302 board, with 42 GPIO pins, I guess this should be the most pins that I could find for now.
